Coat of arms of Joh.George Fuhrmann
Johann George FUHRMANN, pharmacist was born abt.1630/1640 in Zedlin or Köslin as a son of the pastor Joachimus Fuhrmann and his wife Anna Heise.
George was a pharmacist and founded his pharmacy in Birnbaum in 1662 or earlier with a privilege of the Starost of the town at that time, Christoph von Unruh. This privilege is lost, probably during the big townfire in 1682 as also the townhall burned down.
The previlege was renewed by Boguslaw von Unruh, the next Starost of Birnbaum, on 22.September 1689.
Gravestone Christoph v. Unruh
The pharmacy was new build in the Marketstreet of Birnbaum and was still
operated there till 1978.
The previleg was kept under the archivnumber C29 in the Statearchive of Posnan
till 1939 and is lost during WW II.
first mention of Georg Fuhrmann in the churchrecords of Birnbaum
in 1662
He acquired the citizenship of Birnbaum befor 1663, in his marriagerecord he is called a citizen.
He married on 13 November 1663 in Birnbaum Johanna Elisabeth Schorbach. Unfortunately is nothing told about her parents or her origin. So we can only speculate about her origin. The surname is deducted from the little village Schorbach in Hassia and the surname is first written in taxlists there in 1540. So it is possible her ancestors came as immigrants from Hassia to Posnan area.
marriagerecord on 13 Nov.1663 of George Fuhrmann and
J.Elis.Schorbach
The couple had 5 children, but only 3 grew up
Johannes , the eldest became pharmacist as his father and took the pharmacy from his father.
George the 2nd died as a
child and the 3rd son got the same name. He became also pharmacist.
In the churchrecords is no marriage of him, but a son is baptised and in the
record is said he is born after his fathers dead. But it is nothing told about
the mother. So George, may be, is one of the latest deceased of the plague-epedemic
or he died outside of Birnbaum.
The only daughter died at the age of 2 and about the son Elias we only find his
birthrecord but nothing more.
With Johann George Fuhrmann ends the line of gapless written records of documents and churchrecords. But with secondary sources and the coat of arms we can trace back the family till abt. 1460
In a dissertation of the University of Frankfurt/Oder from 1902 is a quotation out of the townrecords of the town Stargard from 1652, where the pharmacist Johann George Fuhrmann, son of the pastor Joachimus Fuhrmann from Köslin asks for a permit to build a pharmacy in this town.
So we think, this is an indication of his
heredity together with his coat of arms and the coat of arms of Jacobus Fuhrmann
with similar parts it is a strong indication of our ancestry.
The origin out of a pastorsfamily isn’t implausible, because in that time most of the people couldn’t read or write and the pastors children had the previlege to learn. And for a pharmacist it was nessessary to be able to read and to write and to know Latin, because the doctor wrote the remedy in Latin and the ingredients had Latin names.
